How can 3D printing change the way observatories are built? STRATA studies the applications of 3D printed construction through the backdrop of a modern astronomical observatory. Drawing from the language and tectonics of the local Palo Duro Canyon, STRATA utilizes the divisions between spaces, textured walls, and the buildup of layers to blend 3D printed construction with natural aesthetics. By exploring 3D printing techniques as a method to reduce the labor component of construction, STRATA aims to both build larger and still reduce the associated costs of the typical observatory construction process. Integration of structure, ventilation, and lighting are a few of the ways that STRATA identifies additional design opportunities within the current printing technologies. Each design opportunity pushes the efficiency of 3D printing even further, while also enhancing the aesthetics of the final product.en
