The Beehive
Abstract
The Beehive is an architectural design concept for a mixed-use multifamily housing complex located in Salt Lake City, Utah. This innovative project employs adaptive reuse strategies to revitalize an existing Portland cement factory, strategically selected to combat the progressively inflated housing needs of the growing city. The site selection for this adaptive reuse project is in the Granary District, an area that has been undergoing a transformation from industrial to residential uses. The decision to repurpose the cement factory located in this area was motivated in part by the presence of preexisting and operational train facilities on the site, offering potential for conversion to mass transit. The project delves into the site selection process and the design concepts employed to transform the factory into a functional and aesthetically pleasing mixed-use multifamily housing complex. The content investigates both the reuse of existing structures as well as the construction of new developments to address the changing needs of an increasing large and diverse population.
