Observer Emotions, Attitudes, and Behaviors in Response to Witnessed Incivility
Abstract
Witnessed incivility has been demonstrated to lead to negative job-related and affective outcomes for observers. To further examine the impact of witnessed incivility on observers, participants were recruited (N = 95) for an online, survey study through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk and responded to open-ended questions about their experiences witnessing incivility. In total, 160 incidents were reported by participants. Using a qualitative approach, themes emerged related to the: (a) types of witnessed incivility and workplace mistreatment; (b) situational characteristics; (c) observer emotions, (d) observer attitudes about perpetrators and targets of incivility; and (e) the observer behavioral responses. This study provides new insights about (a) what types of emotions resulting from witnessed workplace mistreatment and incivility, (b) the affective attitudes towards perpetrators and targets, and (c) the situational circumstances that lead to the observer intervening or not intervening when they witness workplace mistreatment and incivility. Implications and future directions are discussed.
