While previous research has focused on the effects of genetic information on behavior and perceptions of phenotypes, this research examines the subjective experiences associated with believing that one’s behavior is consistent with their genetic information. Specifically, the project examines how information about one’s genetic makeup can affect feelings of authenticity. We expect that an alignment between perceived genetics and behavior will lead to greater feelings of authenticity. The theoretical framework we will be working from is an integration of research on genetic essentialism and the theoretical framework of authenticity. In this study, we will investigate the effects of an alignment between perceived genetics and behavior on one’s authenticity, or the feeling that one is being who they “truly” are deep down. Each participant will complete personality measures and then provide a saliva sample they believe will be used to determine their genetic information. Two weeks later, participants will return to the lab and be randomly assigned to genetic feedback indicating that they possess a risk-taking gene or a risk avoidance gene. We will then measure actual risk taking behavior and assess participants’ feelings of authenticity during the risk-taking task.
