TT08 - Motor/Generator Set Non-Contacting Torsional Vibration Measurements
Abstract
Owners of variable frequency drive (VFD) trains report challenges in detecting and monitoring shaft stress resulting from drive harmonics and inter harmonic distortion interactions with shaft torsional natural frequencies (TNFs). Magnetostrictive technology was applied to turbo machinery to measure torsional vibration. A fully coupled torsional vibration model was developed. The predicted and measured values for each sensor, as faults arise, were compared for transient and steady state to relate measured torsional vibration features to VFD behavior.
