An archaeological survey was conducted by Brazos Valley Research Associates on September 2 1988 at a 25 acre tract just north of the Dayton Corporate boundary in Liberty County, Texas. This survey was funded to search for prehistoric and/or historic sites in the area set aside for the proposed Dayton City Park. A pedestrian survey, accompanied by shovel testing and limited auger probing, failed to locate evidence of cultural materials. Due to a virtual absence of sandy soil in the project area, it was concluded that this is low probability area in terms of prehistoric habitation. The project area is located on land granted to Beasley Prewitt by the Mexican Government in 1831. Until it was sold to Champion Paper and Fiber Company in 1947, it's main·use was probably farming or ranching. Since 1947, use of this tract has been primarily restricted to logging activities which have severely disturbed the ground surface throughout the project area.en
