Motivating People to Conserve Energy--Energy Conservation Education
Abstract
Energy is not saved merely by the installation of sophisticated computers, elaborate process equipment or wonder gadgets. Energy is saved or lost by the people who turn the valves that consume energy. The first step in any successful energy conservation program is to motivate employees to eliminate waste with existing equipment. The first hurdle of any energy conservation program is to modernize the attitudes of the entire organization regarding the cost of energy. This is accomplished through the use of education and training programs to all employees. These programs should be directed at dispelling the obsolete practices and ideas of the days when energy was both cheap and plentiful. This paper will compile the attitudes and activities of the member companies of the Gulf Coast Energy Conservation Society (GCECS) in the field of Energy Conservation Education. In addition to the author's experiences, observations, and opinions, this paper includes the results from a recent survey of the member companies of the GCECS.
