Extending Quality Management to Utility Costs
Abstract
By installing permanent instrumentation and linking it to the appropriate software, a Utility Cost Management Information System, can be created which will identify where, when and how energy is used in a facility on a dynamic and real-time basis. It will allow energy decisions to be information-based rather than product-driven and savings from investments in energy improvements to be verified and maintained. The resulting data will allow energy consumption patterns and utility costs to be understood and managed in the same manner as all other costs within a facility. It will allow Total Quality Management programs and techniques to be extended to utility costs in order to produce the same benefits that are being realized in all other areas. UtiliTRACK Corporation has been using this approach since 1980 and has produced savings ranging from 15 to more than 50 % in commercial, institutional and industrial facilities; often with no capital investment by the owner. This presentation uses monitored data from actual projects to demonstrate the approach and the results it can produce.
