Das Kreuz auf dem Schlachtfeld
Abstract
(Black and White) This postcard is a photograph of the Cross of Saarburg, a field cross near the village of Buhl-Lorraine, featuring a statue of Christ. As part of the Battle of Lorraine, the Battle of Saarburg took place here in August 1914 and the Cross was damaged by grenades with only the statue of Christ remaining intact. The poem "Das Kreuz auf dem Schlachtfeld" can be "sung to the tune of 'O the bloodied and bruised.'" There is no stamp, as it seems to be sent from the field, but two legible postmarks are present. The first postmark is from Saarburg, Lorraine on April, 12, 1915 at 9:10 A.M. The second probably provides military information. The message is in German, and dated from Saarburg on April 11, 1915.
