dc.description.abstract | The principal objectives of the Automated Highway graphics. System (AHS), an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technology, are to increase the safety and through-put of the existing highway by traffic automation. Advanced Vehicle Control Systems (AVCS) play a key role in traffic automation. Central to the Development of AVCS for vehicles is the design of an Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) system that automates the task of maintaining a safe following distance. A properly designed ICC system has the potential to smooth traffic flows and increase the traffic flow capacity of the existing highway. Near term applications of AVCS cannot rely on communication between vehicles to maintain a safe following system. In an Autonomous Intelligent Cruise Control (AICC) Systems, the throttle and brake are controlled by a computer based on onboard sensory information, and the steering task is manually controlled. AICC systems proposed so far do not consider their impact on the traffic flow stability. In this thesis, an AICC system is synthesized from a traffic flow specification on stability and capacity. Analytical results of this thesis are verified by numerical simulations. | en |
