dc.description.abstractThis article reviews the recent history of journal publishing in the the fields of cartography, GIS, history of cartography, and related subjects. The impact of the Internet and Web-based publishing on cartographic journals is discussed, with particular emphasis on the development of "open access" electronic journal publishing. The philosophy and guiding principles behind Coordinates as an online open-access journal are presented. An effort is made to project existing trends into the future, and to predict the direction of cartographic publishing in the coming decades.en
