Abstract
Artificial insemination (AI) is the process of depositing semen into the reproductive tract of a mare. Different kinds of semen can be used for AI: fresh, cooled, or frozen semen, with each having its own recommendations for total sperm numbers and processing. This method allows breeders to access stallions from around the world, eliminating the need for physical presence and reducing travel for the mare. In some states, AI can be performed without a licensed veterinarian, allowing horse owners access to advanced breeding techniques, emphasizing the need for education on this topic. However, a licensed veterinarian should be consulted when there are issues with the mare. AI offers numerous advantages over natural insemination, such as access to superior genetics. For mares, it minimizes stress and reduces the risk of disease transmission associated with live cover. AI enhances safety for horse handlers by lowering the risks involved with breeding.
