Abstract

The electrical breakdown and field emission are important factors which limit the maximum electric field of rf cavities and performance of high gradient accelerators. In order to improve our understanding of rf breakdown, to achieve higher accelerating gradients and reduce field emission, the following research has been done. The values of rf breakdown field and field emission with different materials were obtained by measuring the rf power loss and continuous x-ray spectrum. The dependence of rf breakdown on pulse length and repetition rate for copper and niobium has been tested. The SiO2 thin film coating has been tested as a method to reduce field emission. The SiO2 thin film can stand external fields up to 156 MV/m without destructive breakdown.
