Misalignment of machinery shafts causes reaction forces to be generated in the coupling which affect the machines and are often a major cause of machinery vibration. The reaction forces generated by the couplings are described for each type of coupling in current use and especially for the several types of nonlubricated couplings which are seeing increased usage. Comparative values of these forces are presented in graph and tabular form for ease of comprehension and for reference use by the reader to evaluate specific machinery/coupling applications. The effect that these forces have upon machines is described in general and in certain specific field examples where even diaphragm coupling forces had to be reduced to permit satisfactory machinery operation.en
