| dc.description.abstract | Using only verified tornadoes at the ground during the summer of 1968 within 100 mi of the radar, studies were made to determine possible distinguishing characteristics of the echoes. Features investigated included general appearance, hooks, position of tornadoes in echo, intensity, lifetime, speed and direction, and height, as well as time variations in all of them. Concurrent sferics and other meteorological data were also studied. A very marked preference for the hours 13-1700 local time was found and some proturbances were observed in most cases. Other characteristics normally associated with severe tornadoes at more northerly latitudes, were found in only varying degrees in what usually appear to be smaller, less intense storms in the South Florida area. The summer cases are also compared with the two most intense tornadoes that occurred in Miami during the past 34 years. | en_US |
