Abstract

In the late seventies, Canada put in place several programs designed to support the development and implementation of new ideas as well as the improvement of old technologies to utilize renewables as a source of industrial energy. In spite of the present international oil glut, we anticipate a continued growth in conversions to biomass energy at least to the end of the century. This paper will look at some of the lessons learned from the renewable energy programs in general, and how they can be applied to overcoming the barriers to biomass conversion technologies. Some examples of conversion will be given to show how these barriers are identified and overcome.
