Abstract
This thesis describes the design and implementation of ics. a software based gesture generator that takes as its input textual representations of American Sign Language gestures and outputs the corresponding gesture motion through the use of a computer generated puppet in real-time. The system allows the linking together of gestures to form sentences. It also allows encoding of new gestures through motion specification tools and a scripting language. The gesture generator is intended for use in a number of different sign language applications including an English speech to American Sign Language translation system.
