Abstract

The distribution, morphology and ultrastructural details of Mytilus edulis L. haemocytes in the mantle following shell damage are described. Throughout the experimental period there were marked changes in the cellular composition of haemocytes which infiltrated the mantle connective tissue and outer face of the outer fold epithelium under the region of shell damage. Five days after shell removal an approximately tenfold increase in small agranular basophils, a fourfold increase in macrophages and a fivefold increase in granulocytes were observed. The numbers of small agranular basophils 7 days after shell removal decreased, while macrophages and ganulocytes gradually increased until a steady state was reached. The response and role of these classes of haemocytes following shell damage are discussed.
