Abstract
The trauma of traffic crashes in our society has motivated the initiation of 18 Federally-sponsored traffic safety programs in most states in the nation. One of these programs is driver education. The typical driver education program includes classroom and in-car instruction, the latter traditionally requiring a 1-1 student-teacher ratio. The cost of using professional teachers under such conditions motivated the trial use of paraprofessionals for in-car instruction in Texas beginning in 1967. The success and longevity of the driver education teaching assistant program in Texas created the need for a reliable technique for selecting the best applicants. The purpose of this study was to develop a psychometric battery of instruments that would effectively predict the success of applicants to serve as driver education teaching assistants. The battery was based on a job description developed from descriptive statements received from 18 driver education program directors across the state where teaching assistants were used. The battery was named the Driver Education Teaching Assistant Personnel Selection Form, and the acronym DETAPS was used for its reference.
