Abstract

Research was conducted to develop an algorithm capable of generating optimal management policies for the real-time operation of a multipurpose river basin. The real-time management problem for a river system is expressed mathematically as continuous-time optimal control formulation. The continuous problem is approximated by a discrete problem version, and the algorithm for solving the discrete problem is given. The optimal control algorithm is applied to several hypothetical river system configurations and to an idealized version of the Upper Trinity River Basin in Texas. Problems concerning the implementation of the control algorithm into an actual real-time management system are examined. Instrumentation and data collection requirements are also discussed.
