Abstract

A sonic anemometer has been developed which measures wind velocity by transmitting and receiving a train of pulses through pairs of transducers on a time-shared basis. This instrument offers linear, rapid response measurements of the wind and direct readout of the horizontal and vertical velocity components. The development of this instrument thus permits steady-state and turbulent wind loading, wind shear, and short gust length data to be obtained for application to the design of various aerospace vehicles. A discussion is presented of the initial wind tunnel and field test results, which indicate that the operation of the instrument is satisfactory.
