Abstract

The California Energy Commission is actively supporting research and development to improve power quality. Poor power quality can result in productivity losses and compromise safety. Dealing with power quality problems when they arise can solve the immediate problem, but provides little security in overall system reliability. However, a systematic approach to understanding the susceptibility of equipment, the current level of power quality and the types of corrective or mitigation measures available, permits cost effective system design. Energy providers, to reduce the effects of voltage sags, voltage peaks, and harmonic content are funding research and development. Deregulation and increased distributed generation is also spurring research into more complex transmission and distribution control systems. Energy providers, industry, government and support organizations need strong collaborative efforts to improve power quality and reliability.
