Abstract

The Racah irreducible tensor method of treating the angular momenta of N-electron systems is reviewed with special emphasis on the application of the irreducible tensor techniques to crystal field theory. Computer programs have been written in Fortran (IV) to calculate the matrix elements of the various operators occurring in the application of tensor techniques to problems in atomic spectroscopy. Irreducible tensor techniques are used to calculate the energy levels and transition intensity resulting from the configuration interaction mixing of d and p orbitals in the Cr³ ion in the trigonal crystalline field of AI₂O₃.
