Abstract
Upgrading existing facilities for efficient energy utilization and compliance with increasingly stringent environmental restrictions imposes strict restraints upon design engineers. The existing facility must be reviewed and an accurate definition of the configuration developed. An assessment of the potential energy savings and emissions reductions can be developed for each unit in a facility and individual units selected for detailed evaluation. Energy conservation projects are developed and evaluated using a discounted cash flow analysis to determine an optimum set of projects yielding maximum rates of return while minimizing emissions.
