Abstract

We study lasing without inversion (LWI) phenomena in three-level media due to injected and induced atomic coherence. In the first case, a quantized, single-mode radiation field interacts with a coherently prepared atomic beam. We derive the master equation for the field density matrix and calculate the average number of photons in the field. In the second case, thermally populated atoms are coupled with two classical fields in a [] configuration. We present the general solution for the atomic density matrix corresponding to steady state, without making any further assumptions about the intensities of the fields. Conditions for lasing are derived in both cases.
