Abstract
The research objective of the present study was two-fold. The first portion of the objective was to identify competencies needed by future instructors of computer graphics, pipe and vessel drafting, and structural drafting in two-year post-secondary institutions. The second portion of the objective was to gather a consensus evaluation among teachers in two-year post-secondary programs about how important different competencies will be to future classroom instructors in the three specialty areas. The Delphi process successfully generated lists of competencies viewed by the panel of 15 experts as important to future teachers of the three drafting areas. The study also successfully generated consensus estimates of how important each competency would be to these future teachers. There was evidence in the study that the panel members were less familiar with computer graphics than with the other areas. Because of the relative newness of computer graphics in drafting, further research is needed to compile an authoritative list of competencies in the area. The panel generally agreed that each of the competencies specified in the study is important to future teachers. Almost all of the competencies yielded consistently high Delphi scores for importance. This general consensus of importance for the various competencies offers strong support to include the competencies outlined by this research in teacher training programs. Further analysis of the data showed that two variables help explain the differences in the ranks of the different competencies. The two variables are: (1) the level of skill required to perform each competency and (2) the degree to which each competency is related to the actual drafting process, as opposed to a more peripheral area of knowledge. In total, the results are quite encouraging. Most importantly, they provide an authoritative list of competencies necessary for drafting teachers in the three areas, with rankings of how important each is to the future drafting teacher in two-year post-secondary institutions.
