Abstract

The publication of the this new NOAA atlas is a first step in helping to provide answers to important questions. The information it contains provides unprecedented foundation upon which to begin to value the Nation's coastal recreational resources. It provides the first complete accounting of the Nation's supply of outdoor public marine recreation facilities. Many users of the atlas will find a few surprises about how much of what type of outdoor recreation facilities are located where and managed by whom? In addition, public recreation managers should find the information presented useful for many purposes, including capacity studies and future supply planning. This document is the fourth in NOAA's National Estuarine Inventory atlas series. Consequently, information is presented on both a state/county and estuarine/county basis, enabling information of outdoor recreation facilities to be related to a wide array of information on many factors, e.g., sources of pollution, living marine resources, condition of shellfish harvesting areas, location of habitats, that either directly or indirectly affect the use of recreation resources. What a close look at these relationships will reveal is unclear, but we look forward to this exploration.
