Abstract
Description
Students frequently struggle with paragraph structure in narrative writing. They tend to misapply paragraph conventions they learned in technical writing. This often causes them to try to squeeze entire scenes into single paragraphs because they think of a scene as a single idea and think that everything pertaining to that scene should be one paragraph. This lecture encourages students to think of paragraphs like camera angles in cinema, a means to focus readers' attention from one moment to the next as the story unfolds. It also addresses the proper punctuation of dialogue and quotations.
