Abstract

This report describes the results of a research program to investigate a new type of satellite attitude controller. It is a momentum exchange device and will be referred to as the VMED (Vibrating Momentum Exchange Device). An analytical study was conducted to determine its expected operating characteristics. A single axis unit comprised of the VMED and the associated electronics was designed and constructed. An experimental program involving a closed loop simulation was conducted to verify the concept. The results were generally favorable and demonstrated that the VMED was able to change the angular position of an air bearing table in a controlled manner.
