Abstract

The angular dependence of the radiance and polarization of light scattered by a suspension of small particles depends on the polarization of the incident light. This dependence, which in general cannot be computed, can be represented by a sixteen element, square matrix. The instrument to be described here is capable of the direct and simultaneous measurement of all sixteen elements of this matrix. It thus provides a tremendous improvement over all previous efforts to measure the scattering matrix. Polarization modulation is used as the basis for this instrument. A theoretical description of the optical system is given as well as a detailed procedure for alignment of the optics and electronics. To demonstrate the precision of the instrument, measurements of various optical devices and scattering systems are presented.
