Abstract

According to a thorough search of the literature, culminating in a 1971 report by the International Reading Association, edited by Nila Banton Smith, there has been little or no research concerning the use of word games to teach reading; therefore, this study was designed with a three-fold emphasis: 1. To develop detailed criteria for word games suitable for beginning reading students. 2. To construct, according to these criteria, seven word games designed to be used by beginning reading students. 3. To investigate the efficacy of these seven word games to help expand sight vocabulary for beginning reading students in a variety of classroom situations. Observations and interviews with teachers and students were used to gather information concerning the development and use of selected game prototypes during an extended pilot study.
