Abstract

Nutritional studies were conducted to investigate the qualitative and quantitative effects of various long chain fatty acids and cholesterol, on the growth response of selected strains of mycoplasma of bovine origin in a number of experimental media. The mycoplasmas used were Mycoplasma agalactiae var. bovis and strains B74P, B5P and TPG10 representing serological groups K, E and C, respectively. These organisms were maintained in a complex medium containing beef heart infusion, yeast extract and swine or horse sera. The growth response was measured by nephelometry and expressed in nephelos units. Growth of the four strains was not supported by media containing lipid free beef heart infusion supplemented with yeast extract or a lipid complex of cholesterol and lecithin, with and without oleic and palmitic acids conjugated to defatted bovine serum albumin (BSA) fraction V. Growth was scanty and difficult to measure in media containing basic chemically defined constituents, glycerol, cholesterol, unesterified fatty acids, defatted BSA fraction V and an additional defatted serum protein. ...
