Abstract

Two inbred lines of cucumber, AR7358-13 and MSU3237 were used to study seed cavity proportion and other characteristics associated with it. From data collected seed cavity proportion seems to be due to a number of dominant genes. A positive correlation exists between seed cavity proportion and seed size, and the range of minimum and maximum seed sizes. As seed cavity proportion increases, fruit firmness decreases. Bloater damage, or amount of carpel separation, increases with the larger seed cavity proportions. More bloater damage is evident when one of parents in a cross has a large seed cavity. In backcrosse where parentage of large seed cavity is increased, bloaters are also increased.
