Abstract

In this study we develop techniques for transmitting information over multiple channels. Improvements are made over available systems which use scalar quantization. The main contribution is in the application of a fixed rate structured vector quantizer to the multiple description problem. Performance results for this system are obtained which approach those of the Entropy Constrained Multiple Description Scalar Quantizer, while using fixed rate codes. We also apply the technique of Trellis Coded Quantization to the problem of transmitting information over multiple chan nels. This is accomplished by modifying known 16 and 4 state trellises so they are better suited to the multiple description problem.
