Abstract
In this dissertation I analyze the digital rhetoric of four Facebook pages that belong to groups of Mexican returnees. These groups are: Dream in México, Otros Dreams en Acción, Deportados Unidos en la Lucha and New Comienzos. Throughout the chapters of this dissertation, I argue that returning Mexicans use a variety of rhetorical strategies, mainly counter ideograms, which are loans, modifications, or creations of the written, visual, or digital language of the oppressed groups, who intend to break with the rhetoric of power. Likewise, I describe how the use of counter-ideograms works in the construction of the identity of these groups, as well as to form a community of support, resistance, activism, empowerment and mainly to counteract the discourse that dehumanizes and criminalizes them both in Mexico and in the United States. The rhetorical strategies I focus on for this analysis appear in the digital environment, since it is there where the groups of returnees find a space that gives them greater audience coverage, in addition to granting them substantial convening power.
