Abstract
Analytical and computational methods have been used to predict the sedimentation velocity of multisized spherically shape particles in binary and tertiary suspensions. Six previously published experimental data were used to compare with analytical solutions incorporating three popular drag models. The equations were also solved on the computer using the Multi-Phase-Particle-In-cell (MP-PIC) method. MP-PIC solutions compared well with results derived from the analytical solutions of four experiments using the Andrews-O'Rourke drag model. Moreover, the MP-PIC solutions also provided a velocity simulation for sedimentation of a particle distribution for which there is no readily available analytical solution. The results support the use of the Andrews-O'Rourke drag model in sedimentation of polydisperse suspension.
