dc.description.abstract"Bucked shins'' are thought to be micro-fractures in phics. the dorsal aspect of the comical layer of the equine third metacarpal bone and are of great importance to the racing industry due to lost training time. There is currently no feasible diagnostic technique to identify the onset of bucked shins. The purpose of this study was to determine if the longitudinal speed of sound as measured by Soundscan 2000[] was an appropriate predictor of bone strength characterized by mechanical testing procedures. Twenty specimens were collected. Ultrasound measurements were taken and bone specimens were loaded until failure using three-point bending mechanical testing methodology. Linear regression and ANOVAS were performed. Final results indicate that further studies are necessary to determine whether this technology is appropriate for use on the equine third metacarpal bone.en
