Abstract
This study describes the conceptual design and implementation of a hypertext art object called Bentlozv Stairs. Bentlow Stairs is a fusion of hand-written text and sketches presented as a series of interfinked pages on a computer. A web of trails form the narrative of the work, and a viewer navigates through the pages using a mouse to select links. The collaborative processes used to build Bentlozv Stairs are described as well as the effect of different hypertext systems on these processes. An historical context is built, placing the work within current thought on computer-mediated, interactive art and hypertext technology. Bentlow Stairs is used to support descriptive criteria for hypertext art objects and to support the idea that hypertext within the visual arts is best thought of as a style rather than a medium.
