| dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study is to analyze the conceptualizations, measurements, and utilization of identity and ethnic identity. Although both literatures are extensive, there has been no attempt to connect the two or consider the manner in which one affects the other. This is an important criticism in that ethnic identity is thought to hold a high degree of salience and greatly effect overall global identity. The identity literature will consist of theoretical frames as proposed by Stryker, Burke, and Callero. The ethnic identity review will begin with the self-hatred literature, move through the social-psychological frames, and close with the reemerging stage theories. A third section will concentrate on the compatibility (or lack thereof) of the two literatures and suggestions as to how it could be improved. Transracial adoption will be used as an example of the utility of this study. This issue deserves considerable attention as policies concerning transracial adoption are presently being implemented at both the state and federal levels. | en |
