The role of construction education: a study to evaluate the success of construction education programs in serving the current and future needs of the construction profession
Abstract
The education of construction professionals is of extraordinary importance to the construction profession. Foreign competition, increasing liability risk, and technological decline are eroding the position of prominence long enjoyed by the American construction industry. Continuing studies in the area of construction education are essential in order to ensure that construction education programs remain responsive to the needs of the profession. The purpose of this study is to identify and evaluate prevailing attitudes toward construction education, the role of construction education within the profession, and the success of construction education programs in serving the current and future needs of the profession. A survey questionnaire was used as a means of gathering data relevant to the study. Based on the results of the survey, several conclusions are drawn. Construction education programs are highly valued by members of the profession, the overwhelming majority of whom believe such programs are an "essential" part of the profession. Industry professionals and construction educators alike exhibit a strong concern for the quality of construction education and are generally satisfied with construction program graduates. Fewer construction professionals, however, are as satisfied with the overall performance of construction education programs. Several areas requiring further study are identified as a result of the survey and the conclusions drawn from the study.
