Abstract
The purpose of this study was to collect and analyze data pertinent to the recruitment and retention of persons preparing to be industrial arts teachers. Data for the study were received from a national sample of undergraduate students majoring in industrial arts teacher education through the use of a specifically developed questionnaire. The sample of students and the responses to the questionnaire were obtained by contacting university industrial arts teacher education department heads previously selected through a stratified random sampling process. Resulting data from 668 usable questionnaires were received from 24 institutions. The typical student preparing to be an industrial arts teacher emerged as a white single male, aged 21 years, a senior who had up to 12 months of part-time work experience, but no full-time work experience. This student probably did not transfer into the current university program from another institution, did not transfer from another department within the current institution, and lacked previous military experience. The decision to teach was probably made in high school, where he had some previous experience in industrial arts. This typical student may have had some previous experiences in working with materials or in a leadership role working with children which influenced his decision to prepare to teach industrial arts. ...
