Abstract
This study was designed to identify job types functioning in the adult basic education career field in Texas. A job inventory was constructed in accordance with recommended procedures and then utilized to collect occupational data from incumbent workers in local adult basic education programs. The occupational data were input to the CODAP programs for data processing and analysis. CODAP is an acronym for Comprehensive Occupational Data Analysis Programs and consists of twenty-four computer programs specially designed to analyze occupational and personnel data. The CODAP data processing method enabled the occupational researcher to define the functional organization of job types in the adult basic education career field. Specific criteria were employed to identify significant job types within the occupational field. Three groups of workers reported in the clustering process met the requirements for significant job types. Each of the three groups was composed of teachers who perform a unique, distinct and uniform subset of tasks to meet the teaching requirements of local programs. One group taught mathematics and reported their job specialty as mathematics and GED preparation. Another group taught communication skills and reported their job specialty as basic education and ESL.
