Abstract
In this study an attempt has been made to develop a Model Agricultural Credit System for Pakistan, by (a) analyzing the socio-economic conditions of Pakistan, (b) comparative studies of the evolution of Agricultural Credit Systems of Pakistan, India, the United states, Japan, Germany and the Philippines, and (c) making use of the strong and weak points of the agricultural credit systems of these countries to model an agricultural credit systems of these countries to model an agricultural credit system that will fit the needs of socio-economic conditions of Pakistan. The study has been organized into four parts. In Part I, first of all, an attempt has been made to explain the nature of credit in general and of agricultural credit in particular. Then the main peculiarities of the agricultural industry have been brought out and the possible implications of the peculiarities of agriculture on agricultural credit have been indicated. This has been followed by an examination of the possible types and sources of agricultural credit. The salient characteristic of an agricultural credit system have been explained and a few instruments and mechanisms of agricultural credit have been described. The last two chapters in this part describe the socio-economic conditions of Pakistan and the characteristic features of the Pakistani agriculture. The first two chapters in part II describe the historical development and present conditions of agricultural credit in Pakistan. In the next five chapters agricultural conditions and farm credit situations in India, the United States, Japan, Germany and the Philippines have been outlines in their historical settings..
