Abstract
Studies were conducted to determine the phenolic acid composition of DDS, the sequestering property of phenolic acids and the biochemical involvement of phenolic acids (p-hydroxybenzoic and gentisic acids) in the metabolism of calcium by the fowl. Various chromatographic and chemical methods were used to establish the phenolic acid composition of distillers dried solubles (DDS). The acids identified were p-hydroxybenzoic, p-hydroxyphenylacetic, o-hydroxyphenylacetic, p-hydroxyphenylpropionic, 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic, 3,5-dihydroxybenzoic, 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic, 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzoic, p-hydroxycinnamic, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic, 3,4-dihydroxycinnamic and 4-hydroxy-3,5- dimethoxycinnamic acids. ...
