dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this research was to compile data for use as related information in the education of drivers and to derive a formula for computing a hazard index for rail-highway intersections. The data for the study were obtained from the Texas Highway Department, The Texas Department of Public Safety, railroad companies, and field observations. The interval from January 1, 1962 to December 31, 1966 was taken as the study period. The data for related information were compiled from: (1) all crossings on which field data were collected, (2) reports of 642 accidents, and (3) data collected from individual railroad companies. The hazard-index formula was derived from a five-year historical record of 140 crossings where one or more accidents occurred between January 1, 1962 and December 31, 1966 and from 140 crossings where no accidents were recorded during the same interval. The analysis of the data consisted of the following steps: (1) comparison of variables in rail-highway accidents as related to the driver, vehicle class, and geometric features, and (2) the use of correlation and regression analysis to determine the relationship of thirteen variables to these accidents. The hypotheses tested were: 1. Vehicle frequency, train frequency, and speed have no effect on the accident rate at grade crossings. 2.
