An independent particle model is obtained from the fundamental constrained vibrational equations for a many-body system by making certain assumptions. The resulting model contains the attractive features of the Nilsson model but has the advantage of a traceable connection to the exact equations and thus is more amenable to interpretation. In particular, the energy deformation surface is calculated using the new model and is shown to differ significantly from the one obtained in the usual approach.en
