Demonstration: The Key to Technology Transfer in the Field of Energy Conservation in the UK
Abstract
Technology transfer has been one of the most intractable problems faced on a worldwide basis. The problem is particularly acute in the field of energy efficiency because none of the 3 major parties involved, the researcher, the manufacturer or the user is well geared to undertake the task in this still developing field.
The UK Government recognized the problem and established the Energy Conservation Demonstration Project Scheme in 1978 to promote the take-up of cost effective conservation technology. The Scheme offers financial support to companies 'hosting' novel projects which the Government then monitors and publicizes to the relevant market sectors in order to stimulate 'replication' of the by then proven technology.
This paper outlines the objectives and operation of the scheme and illustrates work underway with case studies in the areas of automatic energy management control systems and industrial heat recovery and cogeneration.
