«¡Hideputa Que os Parió!»: Idios Pragmaticus, Vestigios de Afrentas e Injurias en el Quijote Traducido (1607-1620)
Abstract
The present study analyzes impoliteness phenomena in Don Quixote and the first known English translation of the same (1607-1620). It examines the very dynamics of denoting insults and offenses in the translated novel. This dissertation is divided into two parts: the first part provides a detailed overview of relevant background information: the history, the evolution of the address system, and a review of the literature. The second part examines how impoliteness unfolds in Don Quixote. On the one hand, the aim is to develop a model for idio-pragmatics, which is tailored to the application of pragmatics using socio-historical data. The other main objective of this study is to demonstrate the application of idio-pragmatics to the analysis of instances of impoliteness in Don Quixote. To accomplish this latter task, the second part is composed of three case studies that triangulate the nature of address and impoliteness: vocatives, pronouns, and discourse. The first case is dedicated to the pragmatics of insults from the period by examining dictionaries and other texts. The second case is intended to provide the unmarked socio-pragmatic uses of the pronominal system in the novel. And finally, the final application is devoted to analyzing how impoliteness interacts in the broader discourse exchanged. This final undertaking first observes the address system of the translator outside the novel, through letters, and then compares it with the correspondences of address in the translation. The last step seeks to shed light on the different uses insults have in the novel in terms of character development and narration. For this component, insults that exemplified conventionalized impoliteness formulae are examined.
