The Texas Freedom Colonies Project Atlas and Study: State Transportation Projects Guide
Abstract
The Texas Freedom Colonies Project is an evolving, social justice initiative dedicated to documenting Black settlement names and locations, African American planning history and origin stories, preservation practices, and providing evidence-based research support to grassroots groups. We put freedom colonies on the map, on policy agendas, and in the center of Texas history. The Texas Freedom Colonies Atlas 2.0 allows the research team to upload layers to a web map to illustrate the dynamic relationship between the mapped freedom colonies and opportunities for descendants and stakeholders to voice their concerns regarding possible threats.

Description
The Texas Freedom Colony research team has several map "layer" projects underway. Adding a layer to the map means that we have added an entire database of information that has been laid on top of freedom colony locations. When this layer is placed on top of freedom colony locations, the viewer is able to see possible relationships between freedom colonies and opportunities for descendants to make their voices heard regarding possible threats, infrastructure projects, or development. For example, we have just added two separate Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) layers. One layer of red lines shows transportation projects that are underway or that will begin soon. The layer filled with blue lines shows future projects slated to begin over the next four years. Both of those layers are now included in the Atlas! Select the tab in the upper right-hand corner that looks like a stack of paper. That is the "Layer List." At the bottom of the Layer List are current and future project layer options. Click the red or blue lines on the map to view the highway name, the type of work performed and description, county, and nearest district.Department
