This paper concentrates on one aspect of the design audit of rotating machinery – review of the rotor-bearing system dynamics. A systematic approach for performing this audit is presented. This approach is one which has proved effective in a broad range of process applications. Topics such as bearing capability, rotor lateral critical speeds and dynamic sensitivity, and overall rotor-bearing stability are covered. An example problem and solution demonstrates the approach.en
